Students and Nature

Getting students involved in nature is important. As a special education teacher I try to promote the students to go outside as often as possible. Students these days are so in tune with technology and video games that they are missing so much outside. When the weather is nice I try to take my kids outside as often as possible for a walk around the school and talk about all of the things that nature has to offer. I wish there was more I could do to engage my students in nature at their levels with the resources provided.

I completely agree. Anytime the lesson can go outside we do. Whether it's just working on a worksheet or doing a test we can do all of that outside. With my students we go on walks and work on problems in our head. And if we can play a game outside on individual whiteboards then we do that as well. I agree that students need to go outside as much as we can.

I couldn't agree more, as well! I loved doing a "hands on" lesson with measurement or angles outside, or even letting them complete group projects outside. As an adult, I would much rather do my "online work" outside, so I love to teach them what that privilege can look like. Our goal, as educators, is to promote lifelong learners and rational thinkers, right? I love that you do these sorts of things with your Special Education students - it takes a lot of passion and kindness to do what you do!
