Looks Like We Made It

As our learning adventure comes to a close I'm left with question about how to apply the knowledge I've gained.  I feel very passionate about the ecology close to home. One of the biggest eye-openers this week was the amount of drinking water that is used for irrigation. I believe I can make a big difference in my community by just disseminating what I've learned. On a professional level, I would like to lead a project with students centering on Lake Lowell.  Lake Lowell is in the beginning stages of wildlife management and education programs. They lack a biologist and are having difficulty making stewardship decisions because of the lack of answers to their myriad ecology questions. For, instance, they don't even know where the group nesting sites for the grebes are during each breeding season. 

What will you take away for your adventure learinging experience and what do you plan to do with the knowledge you've acquired?

They say the best way to get change is to get involved. I think that it's important to involve what I've learned this week into my life. I can use experiences from this week to strike conversations with coworkers and barmates, students and children, and spread awareness and knowledge as much as I can through the interactions I have on a normal basis. These conversations can be as simple as, "Oh yeah, if you want to catch and release fish, just cut the line instead of pulling the hook out to ensure the fish lives." Whatever it takes to disseminate this valuable information, and hopefully inspire others to become more involved as well. I also think it's a good idea to inform our coworkers about this summer opportunity, and strongly encourage them to sign up (especially those who teach sciences). MILES also offers opportunities to college students, so it would be a good idea to pass on that information to students we know who are interested in pursuing a career in these fields. Long story short, just spread the word!
