Friday Sacajawea Visit

Will McArthur • Jun 09, 2017

Today we went to Sacajawea park in Pocatello to look at the Sacajawea Storm Water Wetlands project. This is an area that was developed in 2008 and is currently being studied by Carolyn Macek under the MILES project grant. The photos are in chronological order from the beginning of our tour to the end. The intent of the project was to keep sediment and macronutrients from reentering the Portnuef.  Carolyn’s task/research is to study the effectiveness of the project.

Carolyn is the one with her arms in the air.

Do over! Final assignment

Josh Nielsen • Jun 09, 2017

I participated in the first MILES program and as my project did a unit on river restoration with my Gifted and Talented class at Franklin Middle School. There was a nice placard asking the community to help out as the area receives little... more

First of all, I had to sign up for a 90 day trial.  And my final video has a pretty big watermark with the wevideo logo, stating that it was made as part of an educational trial.  I'm not sure how much it costs to upgrade or if the district has an account.

By far, the most frustrating part of the process was uploading my media from... more

Sacagawea Park

Brent Patch • Jun 09, 2017

I am looking forward to today's adventure to Sacagawea Park. Some 10 years ago, I facilitated a Service Learning class at our New Horizon Alternate school. We would ride bikes to Sacagawea and other Greenway points to brainstorm and implement improvements in coordination with several community organizers. We helped make Sacagawea more accessible by reseeding portions of the retention burm, transplant wetlands plants, and remove debris from the river. This was a great way to connect the kids with their community and raise awareness of the importance of natural places. It was awesome earlier... more

Rosemary Smith • Jun 09, 2017

This morning we will be studying human ecological systems at the Sacajawea storm water ponds and with MILES researchers surveying se Idaho about ecosystem services.  We will also share our ideas for implementing workshop themes into classrooms.
