Just a Few Things to Watch Out For

Rebecca Jackson • Jun 08, 2017

Today we had the opportunity to visit 2 ponds located in McCammon at the O'Neill Bioreserve. There were plenty of fauna and flora to see or capture and record into iNaturalist. Some were not so human friendly items. We found cactus, tics, ants, poison ivy and trees with thorns that like to grab your hair, but, we still had a fabulous time out there! For future reference, if you ever happen to brush against big sagebrush with ants on it that bite, just find some yarrow and rub it on to take the sting out. Also, if one of those trees wants your hair, your probably in for a fight and the tree... more

DigiLearners: Name that scat!

Darcy Hale • Jun 08, 2017

In one hour with my cellphone, I shot 53 observations and hit 23 different species during our BioBlitz in McCammon, ID.  I will include a couple favorite photos and a pop quiz for digital learners.  I spied 3 different piles of scat.  Digi-Learners:  Who left each pile behind do you think?

Critters

Mark Daniels • Jun 08, 2017

What a fun day this morning we drove out to  O'Neall Bioreserve near McCammon Idaho. I was with the half of the class that threw on waders and wandered into the ponds with nets, we caught lots of salamanders, a few frogs and several invertebrates. We caught a freaky looking critter that turned out to be a dragonfly in its early stages. The water smelled as dirty as it looked. It was glorious.

The other half of the class was concentrating on documenting plants and insects so I don’t know what their day looked like.

When we reconvened back on campus we were able to see the... more

O'Neall Bioblitz

Brent Patch • Jun 08, 2017

We spent the morning at the ponds at O'Neall Bioreserve near McCammon Idaho collecting pictures for iNaturalist. We logged something like 700 pictures and almost 100 different species. I never thought that those ponds were back there nor did I think that the biodiversity was so robust. Another great exercise to get us thinking more deeply about our place in the ecosystem and the services that are available. We also finished up our Filmora digital Ecosystem Services presentations.

Salamanders, Frogs, and iNaturalist!

We had a great morning with Dr. Chuck Peterson and Dr. Rick Williams at the O'Neal Nature preserve, an ecological preserve and research site owned by ISU.   We looked for herpetological specimens, insects, and plants to take pictures of and load into iNaturalist, a great app that allows you to record plants and animals that you find while you're out in your adventures!  The app records the GPS location, and submits the pictures to a pro who will help identify the species!

A fun morning!
